Good to see you. Hello. Welcome in. Welcome in. Welcome in. The wind is crazy. All right. Hello. Welcome in. Welcome in. All right. I think that should get us started. Wonderful. All right. So, I will have to apologize to you guys. I have been Thank you for the heart me. Good morning. I've been so focused in this project that Wednesday came and went. When Thursday came, I said, "Oh my gosh, I forgot to teach the class." So, it was really funny. Hello, Jan. How are you? How are you? Hi. Welcome in. I'm gonna tuck you back down. Do you have any questions? I am speak English. Okay. Russian. Okay. Got it. I'm going to tuck you back down. Okay. Okay. All right. Thank you. All right, cool. So, yeah. So, Wednesday came and went, just blew by. My brain. Thursday came up. I was like, "Oh my gosh." So, what I'm going to do is um I'm going instead of just recording them uh and sending it to you.
I actually am going to record Wednesday's class today and then I'm going to record what I would have gone over today tomorrow. So, I'm going to do that live probably about 1:00 uh in the afternoon. Of course, afterwards the um course material will be in your core shell. So um also too, a little bit of housekeeping about that. You should have all of your course shell, almost all of your materials. You just need your PDFs, which I'll go through this weekend and put in there. So you've got every all at least the replays and all the content. Lots of lots of stuff to look into. So if you need any help, please let me know.
My name again is Dr. Steele. I'm a holistic doctor. I hold seven degrees in my field, all in the natural health care space. Thank you. I like to say that I went to school so you don't have to. And I'm teaching our week 10 of intro to holistic medicine, too. So, we've been diving into detoxification. And so today we're going to be going over more personalized protocols and contraindications around detoxification. So bear with me. All right, let me also make sure that IG is there. All right, perfect. I am going to open this up here. Okay. So, first things first is we're going to really be going over your critical thinking skills when it comes to building out your detox protocols because we want to make sure that these protocols are safe, right? Um, and so that's what a contraindication is.
A contraindication is is it is something that comes up within a case whether it's a medication, whether it's a symptom, but it's a hierarchy that we use for healing to protect the patient. And so we want to respect patients bio-individual limits. And so we're going to look deeper into contraindications which would um are against indication, right? Um and so uh different from an indication, something that is helpful. So, um, healthc care is deeply nuanced, um, and so it all is based off of the individual and more in the personalized sense rather than this general understanding.
All right. So, first things first, if you've never heard of the term contraindication, I want to break that down to you. So understanding what a contraindication actually means. It is any biological, psychological or any energetic state that would prevent a specific treatment because that treatment could be harmful versus helpful. So I think we have to get out of this idea that just because it's it's natural means that you know it's healthy and safe for everyone.
Um definitely please like and share the live just because it it's natural. there can be serious contraindications and so we want to make sure that we look at all the different parameters that make uh something safe and not safe for an individual. So first things first categories of biological contraindications. Thank you for the heart me. Uh things like pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney or liver disease, adrenal exhaustion. So if the patient is in chronic fatigue, think about like um mono uh if you've ever had been experienced mono, you go through a real, you know, exhausted state, that would not be a time or even your nervous system is disregulated and you've been in a fight orflight mode.
Not a good time. Malnourishment. So if your diet has not been in balance and then autoimmune flares because the immune system is already, you know, um uh overt taxed, so we don't want to tax it anymore. And so those are some examples of biological meaning physiological things that are happening to the system. Now emotional and psychological if there's an active trauma, post-traumatic stress, mental health instability, resistance, if there's a lot of resistance, because this is a slow methodical process, lots of grief, those are all contraindications for detoxification.
Why we wouldn't just jump into things. Then there's energetic. emotions such as overwhelm, panic, chronic dissociation, disconnection from your body, those are all red flags because of course if you're not connected to your body if you check out um you're not going to be able to assess what's actually going on. So um and again if you're overwhelmed that fight orflight response is going to be really going and so we really need to do some things to work on that veagal nerve and calm that nervous system down functional.
So again, physiological inability to sweat, eliminate or regulate your stress hormones effectively. So if you can't sleep well, that's going to be a contra indication. If you wake up, you're really exhausted. Um, also too, if you have a tendency not to sweat, that's really where I learned about those kind of drainage pathways and why we we would use things like an infrared dry sauna, etc. to be able to assist because it really allowed us to get those drainage pathways working. And we found that, you know, initially people would get into the sauna and they wouldn't sweat because again their bodies had been really stuck and and holding on and backed up.
And so getting those drainage pathways with dry brushing or steam or sauna so beneficial and elimination remember making sure that they're having a minimum of one two three bowel movements per day. We have that Bristol stool chart as well to assess and you're doing a bowel transit time for this class as well. So you'll really have an understanding. And then there's structural constipation, low hydration. Absolutely. If you're detoxifying, you need to make sure that your patient or yourself is uh drinking adequate amounts of water, half your body weight in ounces because again, you don't want that toxic burden to recirculate into the system. That's dangerous. Um irregular sleep. So again, not sleeping well um because you're not able to really allow your body to get into that restful state to repair and heal. Remember, we can't heal in a fight orflight state.
We can only heal in a rest and digest state. So making sure that the body um is there. And then missing protein intake. I cannot stress this enough. Protein, protein, protein to help your body to be able to heal naturally. Remember, we break down proteins into amino acids and then to keto acids in order to get to acetal coa, the doorway of metabolism.
Why this is important? Amino acids regulate everything, balancing our blood sugars as well as helping with the brain, the hormones, the immune system, the whole nine. So, making sure that not only are we able to consume enough protein, so we track that, but also make sure we're breaking down enough protein. So that's why we look at the stomach acid test, which is optional for this class, but to actually assess, do you have enough hydrochloric acid to be able to break down those proteins to get amino acids.
Remember, you can also just add amino acids as well to be able to get that shortcut, but you still want to repair that. All right? So, lots of things can go wrong when you're detoxing. uh and so we're going to talk about them so you are aware of them. So over stimulation of phase one and without phase two. So what does that look like? That would look like things like chronic anemia. That would look like um massive skin breakouts. That may look like a little bit of arrhythmias, you know, because again, think about that phase 2 and phase three toxins enter phase one. So if they're backing up that phase two for that phase three elimination's going to be impacted as well.
Kidney pressure, large intestines pressure also too using binders without bowel movement um regulation. So again a binder is going to do what? It's going to bind. That's why we need to drink a lot of water get a lot of minerals and electrolytes prior to so we can move those things out. Otherwise the system will recirculate toxins which we don't want. Starting d deep detox without impaired drainage. Again, you can get boils, cysts, masses, tumors, accumulation of toxicity. So, making sure again that you are doing your foundationals, your water, your food, you know, all of those things are not sexy, right? However, they are necessary to ensure that you have a safe and productive detoxification process. Uh, speaking of which, pushing clients into fasting with nutrient depletions. Again, we want to make sure that we're building, detoxing, and rebuilding the body. We're not depleting the body. So, if the body is already depleted, we need to make sure we take that time in our due diligence to slow down and get those basics. There's usually a reason as to why those basics are not being met.
We just have to really get into our motivational interviewing and begin to discuss that with our patient. misreading detox reactions that are actually toxicity flare-ups. There's a lot of conversation around healing crisises, right? Um while it it may be uh natural to have some um stimulation and some not so pleasant um you know aspects of healing. I can't it's a it's a name it's a name that starts with an H.
There is a process that the body's going through when it's healing. So again, where you would think, oh, this is a symptom, and conventional medicine has trained us that something's wrong, we realize, oh no, this isn't actually a symptom. This is more proactivity. This is the body healing itself. Or right, we need to be able to identify, wait a second, this isn't the body healing itself. This is the body being pushed much farther than it needs to be. So distinguishing the two, really important. So some red flag symptoms that we're going to go over. worsening of fatigue. We're talking drastic fatigue drops. Usually the first week of a change in detox, you're going to feel a little bit fatigue, but this is drastic detox like the the or excuse me, uh fatigue where the fatigue gets worse and worse.
It doesn't let up. Dizziness, headaches, those are mineral electrolyte cues, adrenal cues as well, blood sugar cues as well. Skin eruptions that spread or blister. Remember that phase one toxins go into the phase one encapsulates as fats move from phase one to phase 2. But in this case it's kicking out into the bloodstream and going out through the skin. So if it gets worse, we need to be mindful of that. Mental fog, emotional dysregulation. If somebody panics, they go from, you know, emotional oscillations up and down. They're not able to be emotionally stable.
definitely not um good idea for uh them to detoxify. Um bloating, foul breath, hallettosis. Now these are kind of on the borderline. This is if these symptoms are not improving. So again, just like fatigue where it's normal to maybe have a little bit of that the first week, you know, the second week it should really clear itself. And then nausea, gallbladder pain. So that's going to be in that mid uh stomach region. Also too, sometimes like um I I'll drink some herbal teas and things like that and a lot of mucus and so sometimes I'll drink some of these things and then kind of you know up a little bit but it goes away immediately.
I feel relief immediately. It's not something that's going on and on and on. Pretty much anything that's not stopping um is a sign that we really need to be mindful and just make sure um that the body has enough support. It's, you know, always go low, always go slow, and build the body before you detoxify. Speaking of which, we'll get into pause, pivot, and proceed with caution. We'll kind of get a little bit deeper into understanding these things. So, hydration, hydration, hydration, really important when we need to slow things down, but we need to also move things more quickly. We're going to check that urine pH as well as the frequency.
Using that color chart that we have. Protein intake. We're always going to track. Remember, we don't guess, we test. And so, looking at the protein, tracking those grams per day, making sure that we're not eating any more than 40 grams of protein per sitting. Why 40? Because we don't tend to um digest and assimilate over that amount in one sitting. Make sure that the sleep rhythm and your adrenal markers are intact. You can check your adrenal markers looking at your heart rate.
Remember that 70 is that baseline. So if it's chronically low, that's that chronic stress burden. If it's high and you're not like a long-distance runner, etc., that could be almost like a system overload. So definitely need to work on some stress management techniques, some veagal nerve techniques, breathing, etc. Um, and then elimination, making sure that there is one to three bowel movements per day. Remember looking at our Bristol stool chart and without any strain as well. Emotional grounding. Uh so making sure that you're a patient if they are not grounded emotionally, journaling, breath work, getting stability around that nervous system. So again, if if a person's moving, if they're going through a divorce or any sort of of of big life experience, it's not going to be a good idea to throw a detox on top of it. People love to suffer. Unfortunately, I never realized how much people enjoy suffering at some level. Uh and so we we have to be the bearsers of sanity and also make sure that people uh don't harm themselves and that they slow down because a lot of people because they are suffering they have fear they have anxiety they have worries and they want it now and this is not a now process.
Remember we're flipping out of that reactive to that proactive thinking. So if any of the aboves are missing, this is where we pause, we pivot, we um don't want to proceed with caution. Uh we want to make sure that let's say if they're in halfway through the detox, obviously we can finish it out, but we are going to be proceeding at that level with caution. So really making sure that you understand at any time you can slow things down, you can stop things, you don't have to, you know, don't be stuck to the pro protocol.
All right? And so let's look at creating safety because that's really what all of this is about. It's about creating safety and being able to assess for um safety. So you'll have a detox readiness checklist that we'll go over and I'll also provide you. And so it'll have some contraindication stream screening tools that we're going to look at. Some of the big ones we want to keep in mind. Were there any recent hospitalizations? Are they on uh more than three medications? Are they eliminating daily? Do they understand the process? Because remember, informed consent is important. So, making sure that they're fully informed of what's going to happen and alternatives. Uh do they have any emotional support within themselves or at home? And then what are their subjective matter me measures, excuse me, do they feel ready? There's always kind of an energy and a vibe when a patient is ready to do this level of work. So, honor that. And what are they hoping for detox to address, fix, support? I know we don't fix things.
I don't like to use that terminology when we're talking about ourselves. However, most people have that thinking coming in. This is broken. I need to fix it rather than, you know, I'm healthy, whole, and healing. I just need to put that mindset and those actions in place to fi figure that out. And what is the energy levels like in the morning versus the evening? again they should we should wake up nice and refreshed nice little gentle you know you have a steady energy and then slowly in the evening time kind of gently waft off to sleep deeply no interruptions wake up refreshed do it all again so if that's not happening there's circadian rhythm imbalances definitely if you work you know kind of odd hours at night long time etc so want to make sure that you recognize and balance right the PA patient expectation with the body's capacity to heal.
So you may want something for a patient but their bodies may be telling you something else. So being in tune to the body, listening to the body, not pushing the body, not forcing the body, all of the this is all why we're going over these uh things. All right, so now let's start looking at a case study and kind of break this down a little bit more. So, your client is on TikTok, right? And they just completed a parasite cleanse and now they want they're so excited.
They heard about you. Now, they want to do a gallbladder flush. However, she's underweight. She has diarrhea and she only sleeps about 3 to four hours a night. Why? Because she's probably up on the Tik Tok every night. So, we're going to think to ourselves, what are the risks? Well, the risks are she's probably losing nutrients and minerals because she's underweight. She has diarrhea. So, we know that fast transit time is probably something that's there.
She's not absorbing. Uh she's probably missing fibers, probably missing protein, etc. Also, too, she's not sleeping really well, only 3 to four hours a night, so she's not getting into deep repairative sleep. She just did another cleanse. We have no idea where she got the cleanse, what what the information was, etc. Again, as a professional, we have professionalgrade products and we recommend professionalgrade products that we understand the role of manufacturing and all of these aspects of it. Um, so that we make sure that we're again not causing more harm. So, how would you slow her down? Because she's excited, she wants the next trend. How do we slow her down? we need to reframe out of this sense of urgency and fear and into this this place of healing.
We would definitely um need to look at what our language that we would use to reframe that. So I recognize, I acknowledge, I validate, I support, right? All of that type of language is really helpful. However, we reframe. However, based off of these subjective and objective findings, so it's not just me being mean and not wanting you to do it. Based off of this subjective and objective finding, it's contraindicated because of this. And then we're going to offer an alternative, remember? So, instead of this, let's instead work on building your protein, tracking that, make sure that you're hydrating. Let's work on getting your bowels regulated first, maybe some enzymes, looking at your diet, etc. Let's begin to look at that first, build the body up, build a little bit of weight up, get you sleeping a little bit better, and then once we're stable, then we can revisit this detoxification process. So, it's not just abandoning them.
Oh, I can't help you. Goodbye. It's it's validating what they because what it is is that a lot of times they're just afraid and they want reassurance. They haven't been, you know, treated well in the health care industry. There's so much gaslighting that goes on, you know, where patients are going in and they're expressing real concerns and the doctors are not listening to them. So by the time they get to you, a lot of times it's like they just found water in the desert.
And so you really it's it's part of our role and our responsibility to slow them down. Again, therapeutic order. This is not about selling them something or giving them something or shutting them up or any of these things. It's about really holding a therapeutic order and a boundary because it's it's there to help them and it's there to keep them safe. It's not just, you know, arbitrary. All right. And that's how you kind of can tell the charlatans from the people who actually know what they're doing. All right, so part six. So worksheet, we're going to go ahead and preview that. So this is our detox decision flowchart. So contraindications edition. So we're going to work on this step by step and begin to look at this. Um so first things first are the foundations in place. Remember, our sleep, our water, our food, our movement. Are all of those foundational pieces that we've gone over in place? If no, we pause. We have to work on that. Whether it's time management, stress management, you know, getting the patient out of fight or flight, etc.
There's so many different components that we have to do in order to build the system up to prepare for detoxification. And so, there's color-coded pathways we're going to review. green being safe, yellow being build, and red being contraindicated. And so, um, you'll have this to complete at the, uh, as the, um, assignment is or the class is done. And I will make sure that I put it in there, uh, for you. Okay, here we go. Let me find. All right, cool. Sweet. All right, so flowchart questions. First things first, are there bowel movements occurring at least once per day? If no, red, we're going to support elimination. So, again, hydration, fiber, magnesium, greenery, we're going to check um salivary pH levels. We're going to check stomach acid. We're going to see what's going on upper GI, right? So, if yes, if they're moving one, two, three bowel movements per day, we're going to continue. Now our hydration again is our patient drinking half their body weight in ounces in water that is trackable.
So they they confidently say they're not they're not just saying oh yeah I don't know maybe you know they're saying no confidently I drink 32 46 74 80 100 90 ounces etc. That's consistent daily also to remind them of that um urine tracking chart as well. So if yes, continue. The next protein, are they consuming adequate amounts of protein to support phase two? Um, and so if no, we're going to build up with amino acids and we're going to work with them on their nutrition. Again, it could be a time, money, resource issue around their nutrition. So we're we're not going to necessarily go into a shame or blame. We're we're going to observe what they're currently doing and then we're going to build upon that.
So, it's so much better than doing deprivation. If you try to do a deprivation plan with people's nutrition, they're going to they're going to bolt. Um, or you'll have the compliant ones that like knuckle down, you know, but eventually it's just not sustainable. So, the first thing I teach people is lifestyle eating. How to eat for your lifestyle. Not where like now all of a sudden you're weighing every, you know, grain of rice and, you know, no, where there's multiple ways to track. You can track um visually, you can track on apps, you can track um by writing it down. There's so many different ways to be able to track. It's just understanding how, when, why, etc. So, and remember, tracking is important because, you know, again, people lie to themselves all the time. They assume things without even really knowing.
And so making sure that people are eating at least 25 at least adult humans 25 gram of protein per meal up to 40 gram of protein per meal to make sure that they are breaking down. Hey Solo, thank you. Making sure that they're breaking it down, digesting and assimilating that. Then again, their emotional state. So is the client's emotional state stable? Are they in crisis mode? Are they burned out? Are they in a trauma response? Thank you so much.
If any of those things are going on, if they're just like insufferable, then it's not going to be a good idea for them to be able to detoxify or to support them through that. So, we if no, we want to stop. We want to really work on emotional grounding. Maybe getting them to focus on their breath. Maybe seek a therapist. Um maybe start doing a yoga practice or something where they can really begin to get out whatever it is that they're suppressing and not um dealing with emotionally because detoxification is just going to make it more intense. So, if we try to push a detox and their emotions are not in balance and not in check, it's going to be they're just going to go even more and their adrenal glands are going to be um fried as well.
All right, let me change this up. Okay, so medications also. So, is there any medications with any known herb and drug contraindications? If yes, we want to modify the plan so that we need to consult for reference. If no, you can continue. So, I'll go over what those medications are shortly. So, make sure that you are mindful if they are on medications, what medications they are, and there's none that are contraindicated. Understanding. So, does the client understand the process and agree to tracking their progress and reporting their results? If no, education is required for them to understand the importance of tracking. Now again, there's multiple ways to track, but if they're resistant on that, they don't understand that that the there's safety and efficacy in that and you're following therapeutic order, they don't want to necessarily follow boundaries. Now, there are patients that don't like boundaries in general. They kind of have this unhealed, rebellious teenager, and so we want to call that out, but we want to do it in a loving and gently gentle way.
And we want to really help them to kind of find peace. Usually when they have that rebellious teenager, it's because they had some sort of abuses as a child and so that rebellious teen internally of course is trying to protect that inner child. So uh keep that in mind. If yes, you obviously it's a green light. So go go go. um if they're uh tracking and moving. You'll find some that'll come in and they'll track for days and they're great at it and it's part of their process and others that will absolutely not like it, don't want to do it, don't want anything a part of it. And so there's a lot of workarounds uh for those individuals as well.
It's about making things accessible um at the end of the day. All right. So now let's look at their symptom journal. So we're assessing again for safety. So, we want to make sure that we're looking at their weekly patterning. So, the cravings that come up, stool patterns, urine color, energy dips, emotional surges up or down. Some detoxes I've done, I've been overwhelmed with emotion. Uh releasing things, all kinds of uh whatnot. So, really, you know, also making sure they know that if they're going through a detox phase, not to put a lot of pressure on themselves.
Try to make sure they don't have any company, they're not traveling, all of those factors are really important. Then um also we're going to be analyzing any skin changes and sleep disruptions. So based on your symptom patterns again, which eliminatory organ seems most burdened and would you recommend starting detox now or modify the timeline? So you're going to assess all of these different symptoms and then of course prompt. That's all part of their um informed consent. All right. Readiness, right? So, our pre-dax readiness assessment. Uh and this is all part of your assignment. You know, as you are going through, you'll have a um uh like a PDF form document to fill this out, but I'm going over it with you now. So, um your bowel health. How many bowel movements do you have per day? Are they formed? Are they loose? Hydration. I obviously sound like a broken record. How much water in ounces per day? What's urine color most of the day? Protein.
How many estimate the daily protein intake? Are they vegetarian? Are they vegan? Stress level. How stressed on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being off thechart stressed, one being not at all most days. So you have to track that even if they just track that number morning and night. Uh their mental state as well. any history of anxiety, trauma, or emotional instability? And are they in a healing space right now where they are ready to care for themselves with their sleep? What time do they go to bed? What time do they wake up? Do they wake up feeling refreshed and rested? Medication list, all medications and supplements, as well as um how do they have any um surgeries that they've just finished or are doing in the future? and are any detox herbs currently being used, supplements currently being used, etc. What are their detox expectations? So, what are they hoping to achieve? Are they expecting to lose weight, symptom relief, or emotional clarity or all of the above? So, making sure that you gain g um you gauge their expectations, right? So, if you have a patient that comes in and they eat like crap and they're not being, you know, um, you know, not in their protocol, they're kind of barely made it to the detox stage, you know, we may want to again reaffirm that this is a process, etc.
So, by the end of the worksheet and our prompt, um, what did this exercise teach you about clinical decisionmaking and how will you adjust your protocols when you're moving forward? So, think about that as you review your um worksheet. Okay. So, now, as promised, we'll go into medications and detox herbs. So, herbs aren't harmless. We need to understand again, just because it's natural doesn't mean that it cannot affect you. So, we're going to go over what medications also interact with what common detox herbs that are out there.
So, remember we went through phase one and phase two, liver detoxification. We talked about um that enzyme CYP450 that is in between phase 1 and phase 2 liver detoxification where it's processing um toxins that are encapsulated as fats and processing it over that enzyme and turning it into water to be released in the kidneys or uh combined with bile out through the intestines. So um things that impact that are medications that are processing those specific uh gene snips.
So we need to be mindful of that. Um and so St. John's wart is a common uh herb that does that reduces effectiveness of birth control SSRIs and statins. So if you are on birth control SSI or a statin you don't want to be mindful of taking St. John's wart. Milk thistle even though it's very common I talk about it a lot can alter your liver metabolism of antiscychotics and anti-hyper inensive. So if you are on a blood pressure medication or you are on an SSRI definitely be mindful proceed with caution on milk thistle in low doses if at all. Golden seal um and so again enhances drug levels of anti-histamines and bzzoazipins things like Xanax etc. So it can recirculate all of that through the system meaning making it kind of work better.
So, be mindful of using golden seal if you're on any of those medications. And then, as we know, grapefruit is a strong inhibitor um of many of those medications, your SSRIs, um birth controls. I don't know if it's birth control, though, but definitely with SSRIs, you want to be mindful of um your grapefruit. All right, so here are the medications that are in the high risk category. Um so anti-depressants so your SSRIs um those kinds of medications uh your anti-csychotics etc. Your anti-coagulants so your warin your aspirin because there's a risk of bleeding on things like garlic ginko and gensing. So again a lot of those are being used because of the cruciferous aspect of it. So be mindful with those anti-coagulants. Anti-diabetics. So things like herbs like bourberine, bittermelon or gymna also can lower the blood sugar.
So again if a patient is t trying to take those natural things like bourberine etc uh and they're taking a blood uh excuse me a diabetic medication for their blood sugar. Be mindful of that. Blood pressure med medications also interact with things like hawthorne, dandelion and licorice root which are common in many detoxifying herbs. So make sure proceed with caution and check with your doctor. Uh and then hormone therapy. So um thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, they all um can um be impacted by detoxification herbs. They may actually increase their clearance. So meaning they may not work as much as well because it's can be flushing it out of the system.
Remember hormones um are metabolized through the liver along with nutrients as well as toxins. So be mindful of that. Okay. So, so detox reactions may mimic side effects. Remember in natural medicine, we don't have side effects like in medications. What we have is the body uh thank you for the heart me. We have the body telling us that it's healing. We have the body um that is going through its healing process. And so we want to be mindful of detox induced symptoms, fatigue, dizziness, GI upset, which may be mistaken for medication side effects or vice versa.
So if a person is on medication uh and they're detoxing, make sure that you're looking for those reactions as well because again with medications, different things can happen with the body. It's important to monitor onset timing and correlate with changes in symptom protocol because you don't want to just associate. So if if if somebody just started taking something yesterday, right, uh they don't have a bloodstream of it yet. Now, with that being said, if they're going to have an anaphylactic reaction to it, meaning that they take it and boom, they going to have a reaction, that's going to show pretty quick, 24, 48, 72 hours up to a week, right? But if it's something that let's say oh out of nowhere this happened and only happened once and I don't know all of those things are we need to monitor them and really get you know we have to um patients don't want to necessarily kind of get clear about their symptoms.
They want to react to their symptoms and we want to slow them down and help them to be like okay on a scale of 1 to 10 if it's pain what kind of pain is it dull pain is it achy pain etc. So we we need to get the communication as clear as possible which sometimes can be challenging with people with varying uh communication styles. Building trust and safety uh is definitely important and critical when it comes to building that rapport and building that relationship with patients um to be able to assist them in their healing process.
All right. So assessment tips. So we want to um reconcile the medications. So, we want to include all over-the-counter supplements and herbs that the patient's already taking. We want to ask when they take it, AM, PM, the dosing. We want to look at even their um herbs, supplements, medications, anything that they're taking that is outside of of their food. Um, but also you'll be tracking that too. Timing. So, when they are taking herbs, it's important to space out the herbs two hours apart from medication. things like thyroid medications. Um, oftentimes we believe it or not we have to ask the patient to wake up like set their alarm like two three something in the morning to just to take their medication like their synthroidid so that it's taken you know nowhere near any any of the herbs because if they're waking up and taking it it's they're going to contraindicate because we need to have two hours of spacer. So, some detox programs, like especially for the liver, you wake up and then you take the supplements.
And so, you'll want to make sure that you instruct your patient that if they're on a thyroid medication, they're going to need to take set an alarm and take that in the evening, you know, like first thing in the morning, um, etc. You know, like set the alarm, take it, drink it really quick, and then roll over and go to bed. Obviously, check with safety uh about that. But, you know, for the most part, that's kind of what we've had to do. All right. And then also to make sure that you educate your clients. So even natural herbs can be powerful. Let's time this correctly. Also, we'll begin with foundational support before adding our liver herbs to be safe. And of course, please bring in your supplement and medication list so I can review and make sure that these are healthy for you.
So, we work on scripting and making sure that you know what to say in the event we're working with people because of course people are going to people and they're going to want to pressure you to do. And some people have a mindset that because they have money and because they pay you for something that all of a sudden, you know, your wish is my command. And you realize that you have to set those healthy boundaries for their safety. It's not that you don't want them to detox, it's that they're not safe enough to detox. And so instructing them that and helping them know that this is for their best interest and giving them um a structure and a pathway to accomplish their goals and that's going to really help solidify their self-esteem and their method of healing. So you're going to practice. So definitely grab a partner. We're in an online environment. If you need a partner, go into the community.
You can link uh hit the link um just below this video um if you're on YouTube or the link in the bio and you can join one of our communities if you have not. Also too, this is a self-guided course. This is week 10 of intro to holistic medicine. We're almost done. We got two more weeks left of this class. This intro toistic medicine 2 is all about detoxification. So we're buzzing on to our protocols and making sure that people know how to detox patients safely. So part of it is having those conversations. So I'm going to give you some talking points.
So let's say a patient comes in and they have symptoms or what they think is symptoms, but it's really the bodies just reacting to detoxification, right? Um and so or or they haven't detoxed yet. They want to detox. Their bodies are having lots of symptoms and they're reactive. So things like your body speaking to us through these symptoms. What's your body telling us? you know, what are you doing to feed your body naturally right now? We have to switch out of that disease reactive into a proactive building. Um because again, we can't depend on a government, a doctor, a health care system, etc. because they're all very flawed and very dangerous, right? Especially right now. So before we detox, we need to make sure that you're supported enough to handle this process so that you don't feel worse. let them know that if you detox in a current state of exhaustion, fight or flight, etc., they are going to feel worse and not feel better.
One of the ways that we can really integrate with people is through data. So, making sure that they actually see data. So, we can show them, oh, look, what does your low heart rate mean? It means that your body is not able to handle burden stress. So let's work on breath work and some intentional exercise to build that heart rate up right or how to sleep tracking urinary pH and resting heart rate in form of the start of the plan. So these metrics are metrics that we can teach our patients to monitor and watch on their own. Again, they have to be present and conscious to be able to want to do that. So slowing people down really important in the holistic journey and in the holistic process.
So we want a data-driven approach to our holistic model and RPM or remote patient monitoring is how we accomplish that. Hello. Hi. How are you? I'm well. How are you? Good to see you. It's good to see you, too. I saw the invite and I was like, "Oh my gosh, Dr. Steel, I finally get to catch her in the morning." I love it. Are you um uh do you have a question? Oh, I haven't heard so far. I'm just listening and I'm just listening. Sounds good. Well, I will drop you drop you back down. Tuck you back into the comments. Thank you for accepting my invite. Of course. Love you. Love you, too. Bye. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh, you know what? I totally forgot too that that uh lady sent you an email and she's like been blowing me up. So, um if you can check her that'd be great. I forg I forgot uh uh she was sending me a million emails. All right, let me see where I need to find.
Okay, here we go. All right, so last information about contraindications for detox phrases. Um okay, good. Um so foundational we need to make sure so if they can't regulate meaning that their urine is a bright orange they're constipated not having one to three bowel movements every day we know they're dep you know they're depleted their energy level they're not sleeping well we need to make sure that we're not going to make that worse remember we need to build the body drainage so making sure that we are letting the body know hey we're about to start detoxing infrared dry sauna steam all of those are tools that we use for drainage. You can use um Spanish blacker radish, echynasia, the homeopaths, those are all really good drainers. Thank you. Um then we go into that deep detoxification. So again, we want to make sure that we don't overwhelm the mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of the cell. So making sure you're getting adequate amounts of magnesium, CoQ10, B complexes, amino acids, um those are all critical.
Also too being gentle, right? Gentle, gentle, gentle, low and slow. You can always pause. You can always pivot. You can always rep prioritize the protocol to fit the individual. All right. So again, we want to be mindful. Case study again. Somebody um on the Tik Tok sees somebody with all the hype, right? they buy a cleanse or detox protocol not understanding how the supplements and herbs actually affect their body. Um, and so what went wrong, right? They didn't personalize it. They didn't assess um are they drinking enough water? Are they eliminating properly? What are they doing? They're not actually following a therapeutic order or a process. They're just buying products. And a lot of times I'll see professionals just come on and that's all they're doing is selling product. And so that's not what detoxification is about. It's making sure that once you get to the product part of the detoxification, that your body is prepared, that you feel good.
Usually right before detoxification, patients feel amazing, their energy levels are great, their water is great, their protein's great, their sleep is great. They're like, "Wow, I feel so much better." Right? and then right they feel even better because then we detoxify and take that excess off of the system even more. So just be mindful of that. So some quick reference uh detox safeguards again I know I sound like a broken record but never detox a constipated patient.
Never use binders without water. So that's your activated charcoal, your bentonite clay, your zeelite. Make sure you drink lots and lots of water. half your body weight at minimum in ounces. Thank you for the heart me in water and don't combine multiple modalities without support. So try not to throw everything at the kitchen sink at your patients. Try to keep it simple. Try to keep it organized. Think build, detox, and rebuild. Also watch for paradoxical emotional reactions. So remember detoxification is a process of letting go.
So if a patient starts crying or they have emotional releases or grief, that's all natural. That's all part of the process where we just want to give them tools to be able to support them through their detoxification process. And remember, we want to start with food, not with force. That's the first place we can detox. When a patient comes in, how do I detox? What do I do? Let's start with your food and your water first. Making sure you're drinking filtered water, spring water, if you don't have a specific filter on it. In detoxification, we do go into alkaline water, but remember, if you don't have enough stomach acid, we may not want to support that. You may want to have to alternate sipping that 2.5 acidic along with the uh really alkaline water like the 11.5 or the 10. So, making sure that you understand your pH levels and uh again, food, gentle, water, movement, all of the good stuff.
So today's class we will recap. We listed out contraindications uh which will prevent you from moving forward with detoxification. We're applying our readiness principles. So building a foundation to ensure that you're actually ready to receive detoxification care using trauma-informed language that we learned about. So learning how to communicate with our patients, especially if they're in that fight orflight state. Thank you so much for the gifts. And they want to go go for their healing. They want to put their health on a to-do list. We want to slow them down, ease them, validate them, let them know that healing can't happen from a space of fear.
That's not how we heal, only a space of love. And so we use education to create that love. So we're cocreating these safe protocols. Uh and so really helping to give that power back to them because clearly they feel disempowered. We want to make sure they feel more empowered. Of course, we feel empowered when we know more things about our health. So, identifying drug and herb interactions, making sure that if they're taking a medication that's not interacting with many detoxification herbs. Um, and not to say that if they're not taking anything, go crazy because we still want to watch and monitor for, you know, anaphylactic reactions. meaning that if the patient has a a reaction pretty quickly, first 24, 48, 72 hours, we want to stop immediately because sometimes people don't know that they have reactions to these certain things. Uh, and sometimes it's also triggering detox reactions within the mitochondrial. You know, perhaps some naturally occurring substance is binding a specific um herb or excuse me, a specific um toxic agent, etc.
So, sometimes there can be reactions with that. Even still, I'm always available to help support you through the process, whether you're a student or a patient learning. All right, so we'll talk about timing. Remember, we want to work with the circadian rhythm, making sure you're waking up refreshed. You're going throughout your day, that boost of energy in the afternoon after lunch, not a crash instead. That's a blood sugar issue, adrenal issue, uh usually a digestive process issue. And then in the evening time, you know, at your your appropriate time, you are gently relaxing and going off to sleep, staying asleep all night long, and then waking up refreshed to do it all over again.
Recognizing uh when there's conflicts that come up, whether the patient has time conflicts, money conflicts, all kinds of conflicts. Again, if a person is resistant to care, probably not best to keep pushing on it. Also too, if a patient is moving, going through a divorce, a huge life experience, throwing one more thing on their plate, probably isn't going to be a good idea. So, in those cases, we're going to take a step back. We're going to build the body up rather than take away. So, like I said, tomorrow I will be teaching what I would have been teaching today. So, so sorry. I like really been focused on building out our digital library, which I'm so excited about. So, forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me.
But I'll be on tomorrow at uh 1:00 to go over things. So, this is week 10 of introdalistic medicine 2. Uh this is a two-part course, 24 weeks in total. Uh one to two videos per week. And so, first intro toistic medicine 1 goes all over nutrient deficiencies. 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time goes over all nutrient deficiencies uh which lead to accumulated toxins and overall organ health and function which then eventually leads to disease. So we want to be more proactive instead of reactive. So introdic medicine one and two is all about that introdalistic medicine one about nutrition depletion and a holistic medicine 2 um I think I said all that right is is detoxification and elimination. So building and detoxing. We're in week 10 of a 12-week course of detoxification. So we try to give you a deep understanding of therapeutic order, get your foundational skills of nutrition, detox, case, emotional healing, holistic medicine, and of course patient education, and give you real tools for assessing subjective and objective data that don't require, you know, CDC, NIH, etc.
That unfortunately we won't be able to depend on their data for who knows who knows for how long. So understanding our own personal data, understanding where our data goes is really critical and then using all of that data to create clinical reasoning and safe protocols so you're not relying and dependent on people other people and other people's understanding. You have your own. We have three free communities available. Holistic lifestyle community where we share all kinds of resources.
Holistic health coaching cohort for those looking to train with me after intro to listic medicine one and two is complete and want to move into um a health coaching program or pure black which we go over more of indigenous and afroindigenous healing practices within that community. So, you'll also be able to engage in live discussions every week for the class, share your journey, ask questions, and get real time support. Also, I've been feverishly building up the digital library and digital library access.
So, I've been working on that for you, which has been really exciting. Um, also too, in your course shell, you'll have the video trainings, lecture replays, um, as well as any of the other learnings. I do have some free courses as well as paid courses. You'll also be able to stay up to date to our upcoming events, master classes, wellness collectives that I'm teaching, and all new content. So, your learning does not stop even if this class ends or even if you're not ready to uh go into the class. And then lastly, once you get into the community, you'll be able to access our holistic life app where it is a platform that I use to monitor your health. So you can uh daily track your vitals, your mood, your food, your hydration, bowel habits in a digital format. Uh you can also send me a message about your health data.
I can explain it to you, send your resource, etc. We do also have a builtin course uh access within there but there are separate courses that are more part of their companion courses. So like jump start to healthy eating for instance which is a four-week course which gives you kind of a jump start to eating healthy you know quickly on a dime kind of thing and that has a companion through the app as well. So they kind of work together. So webinar replays, downloadable handouts, assignments and comprehensive progress tracking we put in there. We also have your scheduling and then public health and holistic health alerts um as as they pop up. I will be on tomorrow at 100 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. We'll go deeper into personalizing uh these protocols for you so you understand and then after uh this weekend I'll have everything into the shelf for you. Thank you for your patience with me this week. It's like literally I was like what? Oh man, Thursday.
So, uh, I was like, well, you know what? I'll just do it on the weekend, uh, when it's a little less crazy for me. So, if you guys have any questions, feel free to let me know. As always, uh, the replay will be available on YouTube uh, for a couple days. So, you'll have that and of course uploaded on your course shell. So, all right, kids. Well, I will see you guys tomorrow at 100 p.m. Eastern Standard Time where we'll go over deeper into personalizing your detox protocol. Until then, enjoy and take care of yourselves.
All right. Now,.
