Not Normalizing Disrespect: Boundaries in Healthcare

Disrespect has no place in healthcare—from patients or providers. We’ve reached a point where disrespect is often brushed off or normalized, and that needs to stop. Boundaries aren’t just guidelines; they are essential to creating an environment of mutual respect, trust, and professionalism. 🌿

Here’s the truth:

• Disrespect is not acceptable: Whether it’s questioning a healthcare provider’s expertise, ignoring boundaries, or expecting providers to overextend themselves, we cannot continue to tolerate or normalize disrespect.

• Respect is a two-way street: Healthcare providers give their time, energy, and expertise, but that doesn’t mean they should be expected to take on unrealistic demands or tolerate inappropriate behavior. Likewise, patients deserve to be heard and treated with dignity and care.

• Boundaries are key: Clear, firm boundaries are the foundation for healthy relationships in healthcare. They ensure that everyone is valued—without the need to compromise respect or professionalism.

We are no longer normalizing disrespect in healthcare:

• No more dismissing expertise because of assumptions or bias.

• No more violating personal and professional boundaries.

• No more tolerating behavior that undermines care and trust.

Setting boundaries isn’t about being rigid—it’s about demanding the respect and professionalism that’s necessary for effective care. Healthcare works best when we hold ourselves and others to a standard of mutual respect.

Disrespect is not normal, and it never should be. Let’s stop making excuses for it and start creating spaces where everyone is treated with dignity.
