The Effects of Physical Inactivity & What is it Costing You?

What is physical inactivity costing you BCND

Learn how physical inactivity effects your body. Metabolic syndrome is an emerging health condition that incorporates several risk factors relating to the biochemical processes of the body involved in normal bodily functions. Risk factors such as high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol levels, hypertension or high blood pressure as well as high fasting glucose all contribute to the condition known as metabolic syndrome. Large waist lines with excess fat around the waist line and inactivity all contribute to the development of this condition (2016, June 22). Trends often begin in childhood and lifestyles continue to create more burdens on people as they age into adults with an 8% burden on total healthcare costs, contributing to 13% of total deaths nationwide (Booth, F. W., & Hawley, J. A., 2015). This may not seem like a lot initially, but understanding that these conditions are contributed to an overall lack of physical activity and are completing preventable if appropriate lifestyle factors are forged if people assume responsibility for their health and wellbeing. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends a minimum of 30 mins of exercise daily to reduce the risk of chronic disease, however only 1 in 4 American adults currently meet the required recommendation (Fenton, M., 2005). Obesity as well as metabolic disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc are the result of lifestyle risk factors including inactivity. This has created a new brand of disease known as metabolic syndrome, which really is a lifestyle disorder combined with high stress, low physical activity, poor diet, etc.

Everyone complains that living healthy or living naturally is expensive, however the research proves otherwise. When estimating direct medical costs such as doctor’s appointments, prescription medications, procedures, etc the expenditures on average cost around $2,529 annually. However, when you begin to look at indirect costs such as loss of activity, injury, workplace disability, sick time, etc these expenditures continue to rise in cost to far reaching heights. Physically inactive people spent on average around $330 more in health expenses than those that were physically active. When looking at gross national spending $77 billion dollars was spent collectively in the year 2000 for people in inactive populations. The National Health Interview Survey conducted in 1996 as well as 1996 National Medicine Expenditures survey tracked these elevated medical expenditures finding that people without cardiovascular diseases spent an average of $114 annually while people with cardiovascular diseases spent $2,529 that directly correlated to their inactivity levels which contributed to their health condition. It is clear the cost of inactivity is far more than the investment into one’s health and wellbeing especially when a simple 30 mins walk around the block would suffice as a means to prevent certain cardiovascular driven disease, that in turn creates metabolic syndromes (Katzmarzyk, P. T., 2011).

When comparing employee health insurance spends a distinction can be made in terms of cost comparisons. Annual employee medical costs for active employees were reported at $817 and $1543 lower than those of the inactive counterparts. This is as a result of better looking labwork with marked lower glucose numbers, HDL, LDL as well as triglyceride numbers, which are positively impacted with ongoing regular activity. When exploring a segment of the U.S. Auto Industry employee health programs active employees spent $199-$260 lower than inactive employees when participating in exercise merely only one to two times per week. Medicare retirees of this same communities health care costs were also reported lower among those participating in physical activity one to two times per week compared with those with no physical activity. Inactivity has been proven to be a significant contributing factor to US healthcare costs, when looking at country specific ranges 1.2% to 2.5% of total annual healthcare expenditures are attributable to physical inactivity in individuals (Katzmarzyk, P. T., 2011).

Incentive programs to encourage exercise must be founded in order to motivate, encourage, and inspire people to get up and move. Medical school curriculum still places emphasis on secondary not primary lifestyle related metabolic disease prevention, while still just suggesting a person should move or eat better without providing them with a plan of action. In some cases medical professionals do not even do that, but perhaps wait and prescribe a medication once the person becomes sicker. Integrative medical approaches are necessary to combine both allopathic disease management, when necessary, but also functional medical approaches that look more at the metabolism as well as biochemical functions of the body is warranted. The Human Genome project is one example to which the scientific and healthcare community is beginning to advance towards individualized medicine by looking at genomics, epigenetic, and methylation pathways as they impact the health of the individual encouraging more focused intentional healthcare (Booth, F. W., & Hawley, J. A., 2015).

Alas, when encouraging lifestyle changes with people it is encouraged that the changes being advised must be realistic and attainable for a general population. Converting people into raw food vegans, or turning everyone into cross fitters is far from realistic when looking at someone coming from a sedentary lifestyle into a more active one. Innovations in exercise prescriptions and incentives must play a role with time considerations for busy professionals. HIIT training seems to be the answer with high impact interval training that can be done in low volume with high endurance offering more positive long lasting metabolic impact. This form of exercise features reduced time commitments of 20-30 minutes no more than two to three times per week. Exercise snacking or walking daily before meals for 18 mins also has been shown to improve blood glucose levels preventing metabolic syndrome. Technological advancements have also been provided such as fitbits, Apple watches, and Garmins are used to help us stay on track motivating and measuring our steps as well as other healthcare goals (Booth, F. W., & Hawley, J. A., 2015).

Ultimately, we have reached an era to which the person, not the doctor must begin to take  personal responsibility for his or her own health and wellbeing. Ensuring that a person gets adequate exercise, drinks plenty of water, rests, while eating healthy protein rich and nutritious meals is key in order to positively change the ever growing prevalence of metabolic syndrome. New emerging lifestyle medicine just may be the prescription to that with doctors and practitioners working with individuals to develop skilled plans designed to help people get back on track with their health. After all, if we continue at this rate of being irresponsible with our health our overall healthcare expenses will continue to sour while our health continues to decline creating more pressure on not only the economy but our families quality of life as well. Understanding Thyroid Imbalances: A functional perspective

Thyroid Imbalances BCND

Anatomy and Physiology:

The thyroid is often overlooked when dealing with and treating underlying health conditions. Many people, especially in Virginia Beach and the surrounding areas, are affected by hormonal imbalances. This is based on the many endotoxins found within the environment. Xylene, chlorine, phthalates, etc are found within the environment and eventually begin to attack the thyroid gland. If you looking to improve your thyroid imbalances then, Functional medicine could be the right solution for you.

Two major disorders involving the thyroid are hypothyroidism as well as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is caused by too much thyroid hormone while hypothyroidism is caused by too little thyroid hormone. At times, when a thyroid is off balance it can swing from hypo to hyper states and vice versa. The hormonal system is an enigmatic and responsive system, responding to internal stimuli. It is rare that the hormone stays at a fixed state of hypo or hyper at all times, although trends can be more forward to hyper than hypo states depending on the severity of the thyroid imbalance.

The pituitary gland produces a hormone knowns as TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. This gland stimulates the thyroid to produce T4. T4, another hormone, then circulates the body and converts to hormone T3. T3 is the active hormone that is absorbed by all the tissues and the cells within the body. Most often allopathic doctors test the TSH to determine if a thyroid is off balance if this number is within reference range than it is assumed that the thyroid is working properly. However, TSH only tells a part of the story.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and depression are all common symptoms of hypothyroidism.
  • Digestive issues such as constipation, low body temperature, stubborn weight loss, under functioning metabolism are all related to thyroid dysfunction.

Causes:

  • There are many suspected causes of thyroid imbalances.
  • These are your standard imbalances such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts, parasites, molds, heavy metals, chemicals, etc.

Genetics are contributing factor to any condition, however a small factor. You are not a victim of your Genes, but merely genetics accounts for less than 30%, with some doctors claiming even less than that. It is important to note environment and gut health have a lot to do with the development of hormonal imbalances. When you think hormones, think GUT! Immune System, think GUT! Neurological system, Think GUT!=

Contributing Factors:

Women are five times more likely to suffer from thyroid conditions and are more susceptible as they age. Free estrogen can suppress the thyroid function while progesterone declines to enhance thyroid function. The adrenal glands, as well as hormones produced by the adrenal glands, are also able to throw off the thyroid function, creating more underlying hormonal imbalances. Since the majority of the hormonal system is housed in the GI system it is also recommended to heal the GI system before healing the hormonal system. It is seen that thyroid imbalance is clearly an autoimmune response to the GI system, which is why elimination diets are necessary for balancing the hormonal system.

Testing:

Whole blood testing on the thyroid includes TSH, Total T3, Total T4, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and TPO, as well as Thyroid antibodies, are all common blood panels used to measure the health of the thyroid. Often reference lab ranges are used to determine thyroid hormone health, however optimal or functional ranges are considered more accurate when determining underlying causes contributing to thyroid imbalances. It is understood that the thyroid may be under stress but may not have developed into a full diagnosis as of yet. In order to address the thyroid health effectively, it is also recommended to look at overall contributing factors to thyroid imbalance.

 Treatment:

Synthetic hormone treatments are standard medical treatment. Prescriptions such as levothyroxine (Synthroid), Armour, and NaturThyroid are often used to balance T4 and T3 hormones.

Subclinical Iodine deficiencies can lead to thyroid imbalances especially since so many of our food has been stripped of this mineral. Selenium is also another mineral the body needs in order to fully support the thyroid. Tyrosine, an amino acid is a building block for both the thyroid as well as the brain. This non-essential amino acid can be used to help with the mood and energy levels.

Healing the adrenal glands; as well as lifestyle components relating to stress is key to restoring the health of the body. Addressing any underlying mineral as well as electrolyte deficiencies does provide the body with the necessary nutrients in order to heal itself.

Healing the gastrointestinal system is critical by removing allergens from the diet including gluten as well as dairy. Supporting the lining of the GI system and rebuilding the integrity of the lining of the gut is helping in healing from an autoimmune condition such as thyroiditis. Eliminating bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and molds also help to rebalance the GI system by removing irritants.

Identifying and removing toxic irritants such as Xylene, Phthalates, Chlorine, etc from the system after rebalancing nutrient as well as mineral needs. It is important to not attempt to chelate these toxic substances without the help of a professional. The body is on balances and removal of toxic substances too quickly can be harmful to the body. It is recommended to seek help when identifying and eliminating these substances.

Mediterranean diets have been found to be effective when working with patients with thyroid complications. Foods that are high in selenium, as well as iodine, should be noted and added to the diet in order to continue healing the digestive system.

Ionic Foot Detoxification Services: Benefits of Detox

Ionic Foot Detoxification BCND

Ionic Foot Detoxification is one of our basic detoxification services in our practice. Our basic detoxification services are mild, and gentle to the system while using the bodies own ability to detoxify either through the use of heat, moisture, ionic exchange, etc. They are all safe, effective, and passive practices to help rid the body of many unwanted toxic substances from our body. Unfortunately, we live in an era of time to which toxic substances are unavoidable. The EPA recently reported that over 70,000 chemicals are commercially produced within the United States with new ones introduced on an annual basis. Out of these toxins reported approximately 65,000 are classified as potentially harmful to human health and wellbeing. Over 3,000 chemicals are found within our food supply and over 700 added to our drinking water. Gentle detoxification methods are key in reducing these overburdened toxic substances, while not disrupting the homeostasis of the body. The body must contend with these toxic substances so much to the point that the shear act of detoxification can become difficult to manage on its own. This breaks down the immune system, further complicating the body’s mechanisms to handle basic processes. Major symptoms of high needs for detoxification include nervous system and challenges within a person’s emotional wellbeing. Our bodies have become so overwhelmed by the toxins that even detoxification itself may produce short-term discomfort. This is why we utilize basic detoxification services, in order to clear the secondary drainage pathways to make way for more intensive detoxification processes. Ionic Foot Detoxification is just one of the basic detoxification services offered within Holistic Family Practice with a goal of supporting the bodies ability to heal itself by gently eliminating toxic substances while moving the bodies bio-energetic frequencies.

Five common external sources of toxicities are as follows:

  • Inhalation from air pollution such as second-hand smoke, smog, mold, air pollution, etc
  • Ingestion from chemicals used on food crops, in drinking water, medicines, drugs, etc
  • Injection from vaccinations, injectable substances, and from tattoos
  • Absorption from chemicals used on fabrics and other surfaces, paints, plastics, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers
  • Irrigation from medical X-rays, cell phones, computer monitors, televisions, power grids, etc

Holisitc Ionic Foot Social 0011

Many forms of detoxification exist and many detoxification practices often build upon one another. Many people are so toxic and littered with chemical and metabolic toxic substances that they are unable to withstand physical chelation initially when beginning a health regimen to include detox. Often times in my practice we must first spend time building the body up and supporting the bodies natural functions before we are truly able to detox the body. Basic detoxification including the foot detox is a good way to begin that process. The Ionic Foot Detox System works off of the bioenergetic system. When stimulated the body’s own natural ability to detoxify itself is enhanced and the primary, as well as secondary drainage pathways, begin to flush toxic substances out. When electromagnetic fields are charged the efficiency of the body’s own ability to detoxify is enhanced helping to rids the body of unnecessary cellular waste. Often times people become confused by the process thinking that the water changes colors based on the toxins excreted or even still some people are told that actual participles are removed from the body through the pores. Neither mechanism is true, however, studies have been performed that have tested the PH of both the person as well as the water before and after treatment with a positive result. Even still the water has been tested before, during, and after in controlled experiments to reveal higher amounts of urea, glucose, as well as creatine. In additional subjective patient surveys, participants reported enhanced health from improved sleep, a greater sense of well-being, pain relief, increased energy, improved digestion, etc. Granted this survey was an analysis of participants receiving these services and thus was a subjective not objective analysis of the efficacy. Even still, this is the mechanism even to which placebos work, as people subjectively believe that the placebo will be effective. However, in the previous study mentioned where glucose, urea, and creatine molecules were found in the post water in addition to studies to which ph levels changed within the person receiving treatment does point to osmotic diffusion activity through the skin by cotransporters or substrates. Although findings were small based on the sample size the presence of non-ionic plasmatic molecules suggests the passing of biological membranes and presumably extracting ionized toxic waste.

In my personal experience of using the ionic foot detox in practice, I was a naturopathic student in preceptorship training. Preceptorship is when we train not only with other naturopathic students but also other doctors. I was training with a chiropractor who also performed nutrition response testing and nutritional assessments. I was initially very skeptical of the foot detox treatment but people loved it and my fellow naturopaths who were farther along in their training seemed to be positively affected by it. What changed my perception of the effectiveness of the machine will always stay with me. Of course, we had the common conditions coming in for naturopathic care, diabetes, hypertension, etc. standard metabolic health imbalances that had pretty dirty water. The colors always began about the same with inflammation from the joints expressing itself first, which made logical sense to me. We then began to have an influx of Cancer patients in our practice, some who took chemo, some who refused, others with radiation etc. Those that took chemo their water was black, literally black, dark chunks, smells, it was putrefying and disgusting unlike anything I had ever seen before as I witnessed this I became a believer instantly. I know generally how toxic chemotherapy is to the body and in some cases, it is recommended as a course of treatment. Witnessing the toxic effects of these substances coming out of the body made lasting effects on me, not just with the understanding of ph balances within the body during these states of disease, but also the true effectiveness and usefulness of the foot detox. Even though we all may not be able to explain it, understand it, prove it, or otherwise the wast have been using machines such as these as a means of keeping well for centuries. In fact, eastern cultures to which utilize devices like this one with great faith actually have a better overall health rating than the west with industrialized and high cost, high technology treatments. Although I am not a proponent of better or worse or us against them I do think that the comparisons are interesting to note. I offer those interested in detoxifying themselves and following a different path, perhaps even the road less traveled to give it a try, besides you have nothing to lose but excess waste.

Please note ionic foot detox is contraindicated for certain conditions and all guests to our practice must complete a complimentary 15 mins wellness visit or one-hour consultation prior to participation in any of our basic detoxification services.

What do Adrenal Glands do? Symptoms, Causes, & Treatment

Adrenal Glands BCND

Anatomy and Physiology:

The adrenals sit on top of the kidneys in your lower back, they are two glands combined as one. The purpose of the adrenal glands is to manage the stress in the body. Stress comes as a result of infections, external factors, heavy metals, chemical stressors, etc. These causatives begin to stress the body’s overall function and the adrenal glands respond to the stress on the system. The center of the gland generates adrenaline or epinephrine and is managed by the autonomic nervous system. The outer part of the gland, the cortex, produces the many hormones to manage stress such as cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, testosterone, estrogen, pregnenolone, aldosterone, and progesterone; to name a few hormones that are related to the adrenal glands.

Cortisol raises blood sugar as well as blood pressure levels while modulating immune function. Cortisol levels if low create fatigue, low blood pressure, hypoglycemia, increase in allergies, and an inability to deal with stress. This hormone also relates to weight gain for many individuals.

Epinephrine and Norepinephrine is the stress response and often can be triggered based on emotional as well as mental stressors. These are often perceived threats from the outside world. These can be small perceptions of stress, prolonged stress as well as short-term stressors. In the event of acute stress the body, the body prepares for fight or flight mode which can raise heart rate as well as blood pressure while blood is being diverted from less needed areas such as the digestive system, the heart, the brain, etc.

The primary hormones released by the adrenal glands are glucocorticoids, which can shift biological functions of the body. These hormones mobilize proteins, fatty acids while increasing the liver’s ability to process glucose. These actions primary end result is to raise blood sugar. When stabilizing the health of the body it is imperative to have stable adrenal glands and thus stable blood sugar. Without the stabilization of these two organs, it is very difficult to build health.

The sympathetic nervous system continues to respond to the stressors thus now triggering the pituitary gland to begin secreting ACTH, which drives DHEA. The body attempts to respond to the excess cortisol production and thus begins to downregulate the sensitivity to cortisol. This can lead to a whole host of symptoms. Some common symptoms include insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, and elevated lipids in the bloodstream. Excess fatigue, depression, headaches, inability to tolerate alcohol, sensitivity to carbohydrates, and inflammation in the body are all additional signs of adrenal hyperfunction.

Symptoms:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fatigue
  • Recurrent Infections
  • Recurrent Sore Throats
  • Crashing during stress
  • Achiness
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Thyroid Imbalances

Causes:

Prolonged external stress factors such as excessive work, marital problems, relationship concerns, financial stress, divorce, etc

Chronic infections such as bacteria, viruses, molds, yeasts, and parasitic infections untreated or underlying

Lifestyle factors such as not getting enough sleep, hydration, and food. Also eating heavily processed foods, and drinks, artificial sweeteners, and chemical foods.

Heavy metal as well as toxic chemical exposures from our environment. We are littered with numerous endotoxins to which create imbalances in the system both mentally as well as biological

Contributing Factors:

Some would consider that adrenal fatigue does not exist. HPA dysregulation, physical overload emotional overload, fatigue, and burnout are all symptoms relating to an underlying cause. The adrenal glands are responding to the underlying imbalances in health so stabilizing these although important is not the underlying cause of why the adrenal glands are hyperfunctioning. As we get those stabilized, temporarily, we are able to center the body to allow for deeper understanding to be had, in terms of causative. Sometimes just the stabilization of electrolytes and mineral balances can stop the body from spinning long enough to catch clues as to what is going on deeper in the tissues. Even if a person is unconscious to the adrenal imbalances doesn’t mean that they do not exist. People that often are type personalities, always doing and seldom being, fast-paced, and imbalanced are also not immune to underlying causes that can be driving their health in the opposite direction towards disease. The disease is the breakdown and accumulation of imbalances and not a destination. One does not wake up and have a disease but merely generates it over time through a series of imbalances in health.

Childhood trauma and experiences also contribute to a person’s adrenal gland imbalance. Often high DHEA and off-centered cortisol and epinephrine, as well as norepinephrine tests, can reveal the long-term effect of childhood trauma. Through shifting one’s perception from a place of fear, and trauma to a place of freedom and joy a person can then shift their biochemistry. The adrenal glands are to help us cope and survive stress and therefore secrete precise, minute, balanced, steroid hormones. They are programmed to respond to inner physical, emotional, and psychological environment which is based on perception and not always reality. It is very subtle and therefore modern medicine does not acknowledge its existence because it occurs subclinical and is based on contributing factors such as chronic infections, environmental stressors, etc.

People with adrenal fatigue often use coffee or colas to get through the day with a feeling of unwell or “gray” feelings. It then creates the foundation for other conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, hypoglycemia, diabetes, allergies, etc. These people may appear lazy or unmotivated but in actuality are having to push themselves much harder in order to complete day to day tasks. The hypoadrenal function can create anxiety as well as depression generating increased fears, apprehension, confusion, concentration difficulties, with less memory recall. A person may have all or just a select number of these symptoms. Erratic or abnormal blood sugar also ensues in addition to tendencies towards more arthritic pain and decreased immune response.

Those driving him or herself constantly who does not get enough rest as well as relaxation to enjoy life can be subject to this condition. Perfectionists or those who are never satisfied under constant pressure can also lead to adrenal imbalances. People who feel trapped and helpless, who feel overwhelmed by many difficulties, who experience severe or chronic emotional or physical traumas also have some degree of adrenal imbalances.

Holisitc Adrenal Glands Social 0014

Testing:

Many lab tests are available to measure the adrenal gland function. I prefer salivary cortisol panels over blood as salivary panels are considered the gold standard when testing hormone function. Basic lab work can also give indications as to imbalances in the adrenal glands.

Chronic elevated or depressed WBC (white blood cells) can indicate chronic infections. Low-grade infections are chronic stress to the body and can be in the form of bacteria, viruses, molds.

RBC or low red blood cell counts can indicate chronic iron deficiencies from diet or malabsorption issues such as SIBO, Chrohns, Colitis, etc

Low level of platelets can point to heavy metal toxicities, vitamin d deficiencies, as well as potential autoimmune conditions.

High levels of liver enzymes such as AST and ALT can point to etiology in the liver

High levels of BUN or creatinine can also point to etiology in the kidneys

The kidneys and the liver both are primary filters for the body and stress on these organs can indicate heavy metal or chemical stressors.

Treatment

Treatments vary depending on the person, the causes, and particular case history. These recommendations are made not to replace a trained healthcare professional, yet only to enlighten the individual on the possibilities of natural healthcare options. Rebalancing the adrenal glands is a bit of an art and is very different for everyone. A type a person is going to be treated very differently than a person to which internalizes stress.

Diet begins everything. Eliminating processed sugars, dyes, colors, additives, etc is key. Decreasing stimulants while increasing fresh fruits and veggies is critical to building anyone’s health. Supplemental support may be necessary for terms of Vitamin C, Electrolytes, Minerals, B6, Pantothenic acid, etc.

While some botanical medicines such as adaptogenic herbs such as Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Rhodiola are also beneficial for balancing the adrenal glands overall health.

Lifestyle factors such as getting to bed by 10 pm at night; sleeping until 9 am whenever possible or at least maintaining 8 solid hours of sleep is critical. Moving the body as well as breathing deeply can also be beneficial while managing stress.

Keeping a journal, meditation, tapping, and exercise are all great things in order to do in order to manage chronic stress responses in the body.

Avoiding being harsh or criticising oneself, getting overtired, coffee, pushing yourself and being around those that are emotionally or energetically draining are also contributing factors to adrenal fatigue and adrenal imbalances.

We often work with people with a multitude of stages of adrenal fatigue and guide them through a process and journey of self-healing. It truly takes time and effort in order to restore these glands. It is a practice and one that can be overwhelming to begin, however, Dr. Erica Steele, Naturopathic Doctor, and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner has trained both in the science as well the art of healing in order to help you to get back to your path to recovery. Natural Remedies for Cough, Cold, and Flu Prevention Tips

Natural Cough Cold and Flu Prevention BCND

It is that time of year again. The beginning of running noses, coughing throats, and high fevers. Every one of which has not supported any weaknesses in their immune system are now prone to attack by the many microbes that lurk within our environments. Bacterias, Viruses, Parasites, and even Molds are now lurking around waiting for an unsuspecting host. There must be a way to which one can fend off these critters without having to run to the nearest doctor for an antibiotic. Additionally over the last few year research is being presented regarding antibiotic resistance and the need for more reserved antibiotic prescriptive approaches. The majority of the antibiotics are prescribed in primary care settings and very few times are the prescriptions as a result of a test to confirm the source of the infection. Strep tests and once-overs are typically the cure-alls to in-depth diagnostic testing and children as well as adults alike leave with a scrip in hand for the local antibiotic of the week. Staggering numbers of people approach their primary cares in an effort to find relief from a cough, cold, and flu symptoms with little questioning as to the efficacy of their treatments. Common pathogens causing these conditions in children is Streptococcus Pneumoniae which can concert into a covert serious pathogen in both children as well as the elderly. IN common treatment, Penicillin is often recommended in addition to Amoxicillian. Pre or probiotics are seldom prescribed as an addition in order to reinoculate the microbes in the GI system. Once an antibiotic bomb is sent into the system, it takes approximately two years for the microbes to regenerate themselves, in kind. In a recent Swedish study examining children’s upper respiratory infections and the treatment of which through antibiotics it was founded that although the antibiotics were still seen to be effective the results did prove that continued antibiotic treatment increases bacterial resistances to the antibiotics and therefore continuous work still needed to be made in an effort to reduce antibiotic prescribing as a priority. Antibiotics do serve a place in the management of microbes as long as additional precautions have been made in order to support the bodies immune systems. We still are very much a reactive species in terms of reacting to the disease process only when it becomes a systemic issue. Very few of us work towards preventing disease rather than managing it, however, we are noticing a great shift in healthcare as time goes on. This is seen to be true in the case of H.Pylori, which is a type one carcinogen, most often triple combination antibiotics are being used to treat this super bug, however, in the recent years, it has become more resistant to antibiotics. It is currently estimated that H.Pylori infects more than half of the population; over 80% in developed countries and 25% in underdeveloped countries. H.Pylori, although is still being treated effectively using a triple antibiotic therapy has shown residency towards several antimicrobial agents, specifically clarithromycin or metronidazole.

So what is a person suppose to do in the day in age of antibiotic resistance and fears of susceptibility? The first thing is clear as we leave the era of reactivity we stand firmly into proactivity, especially in the area of our health. It is vital that we work on building the health of the body rather than waiting for and fighting disease. Innovative methods of a cough, cold, and flu prevention have been presented as a means to help support the bodies ability to heal while reserving the need for antibiotics for more serious situations or surgical procedures to which infection possibility rates are high. Probiotic cocktails are provided to boost the microorganisms of the digestive system in an effort to fight infections as they are presented to the body. If all the doors and windows are locked when an intruder steps forth the greater the likelihood of keeping the bad guys out. Keeping a healthy digestive system, which houses the majority of the immune system, is key to keeping all the windows and doors locked in your house. Stimulation of IgA that targets both bacterial as well as viral invaders is key to preventing any pathogens from gaining access to your precious immune system. Strains of L.plantarum, L.
